Tanzania’s southern parks offer a diverse range of experiences, from vast savannahs to lush wetlands, thrilling walking safaris, and serene river adventures. Unlike the more frequented northern circuit, the southern parks are often favored by second-time visitors seeking a quieter, more immersive safari. These destinations can also be combined with a visit to the Serengeti in the north or extended westward for a more extensive journey, depending on time and budget. Using Dar es Salaam as a gateway, travelers can explore a variety of unique landscapes and wildlife encounters across the region.

The southern circuit boasts an array of national parks and reserves, each offering distinct experiences. Saadani National Park, located north of Dar es Salaam, is the only park in East Africa where wildlife meets the ocean. A couple of hours west lies Mikumi National Park, split by a highway leading toward Zambia and Malawi. South of Mikumi, the vast Selous Game Reserve (now part of Nyerere National Park) offers exceptional river safaris along the Rufiji River and guided walking safaris. The Udzungwa Mountains National Park captivates with its dense forests, cascading waterfalls, and rare endemic species, while Ruaha National Park, west of Iringa, stands as the crown jewel of the southern circuit, renowned for its raw wilderness and abundant predator sightings.
